A report from the frontline

I feel a very lucky school librarian at present.  Due to a restructure we have a new TL colleague Glenda, who has brought enthusiasm and skills in Web2.0.  Why do we have a an extra TL?  Because at our school we have a Principal who believes in the importance of TLs to work with students and staff.  Certainly Glenda has hit the ground running and reached out to more staff who are now taking advantage of her skills.  She has introduced staff to Glogster a great presentation tool and is using a Voki

Voki is a free service that allows you to create personalized speaking avatars and use them on your blog, profile, and in email messages.

Both these Web2.0 tools have received an enthusiastic response from students and staff.  Glenda has also been working on our library homepage, wikis and our pathfinders.  She has improved them all so that they look sharp.

Over the last term we have been working with classes on bibliographies, citation, the research process including databases.  As a team we are going into classrooms as well as providing these services in the Library.

We are plugging away at Face-book and Twitter in terms of building up an audience of students and teachers.  However we are using the school portal to promote services to the school population so much so that the portal is known as the Library blog:-)  We get a very good response from both staff and students.

Tricia and I are presenting at the next SLAV conference during a concurrent session on trying to engage students with Social Media – we have 20 students in our facebook group – oh well.
