Wikis, creative commons and intellectual property

I decided that I would have to create a wiki for my new college.  So I copied and pasted across the pages that I wanted from our own Wikidlinks.  this work included my own, Tricia’s and thegroovylibrarian’s.  We also link directly to

This brought up the issue as to how this should be acknowledged particularly some of Tricia’s policy work.  In my view wikis are a collaborative tool but I needed to acknowledge others work.  Tricia noted that the work that we had done was the intellectual property of the school.  So we have branded our pages on wikidlinks something I will do at MUFY.

I also decided to link my pages from the MUFYlibrary wiki directly back to wikidlinks and have placed a button on that site to take students back to MUFYlibrary.  I have invited Tricia, my Head of Library and my colleague Glenda to join my wiki.

Web 2.0 @olmclibrary

Following on from the facebook fan page and the twitter page Tricia and I had a discussion and we set up a reading wiki and an information wiki.  We will use these pages to communicate and engage with students and teachers.  we have created a new front page for the library on the School Intranet.  It looks something like this….

Welcome toWikidreading You can share your comments and ideas about reading and see what others have to say. In 2009, reading at olmc reached greater heights – more borrowing, more reviews, more discussion. Make sure you are part of this in 2010 Share your reviews here.

Welcome to the olmc library facebook page. Reviews, booktrailers, great links and more from olmclibrary for staff and students

Follow us on twitter for all your reading and information needs for online resources, Web 2.0 and great links

Our core service is information and reading and we think we have it covered in this simple format.

I had my appraisal of my years self learning project on using Web 2.0 in the classroom and all went well.  My aim for next year is to work in the classroom more with teachers and students using practical web 2.0 applications in assessment and presentation.

Library book wiki wikid reading

wikid reading

is the title of the Library book wiki. Tricia the head of library and myself have been working with Year 7 and 8 English classes to introduce them to the wiki and encourage them to write one review in their reading class. Tricia has been challenged by working out how the wiki works – we seemed to be losing the reviews. However Tricia sorted it out over the weekend and we have located our reviews and they are all now on the library page. The girls seem to have enjoyed the experience of writing their reviews and comparing them to other reviews of the same titles. I have enjoyed working with the girls and discussing the books they have been reading while we have been working on the wiki.

With the year 7 girls instead of talking about the books that are new, recommended etc I have been telling them the story of ‘The society of S’ a vampire novel that I just read and enjoyed. so my library lessons have started ‘once upon a time’. I have to say that the year 7s were sucked in and would run to reserve the title. I thought that I would try the same with the year 8s. No way did this approach work with them, luckily we have been concentrating on the wiki instead
